张一鸣在华盛顿大学福斯特商学院获得运营管理博士学位，并于2017年在中国科学技术大学获得统计学学士学位。他目前的研究重点是数据驱动的服务运营和行为运营管理。他与业界有着紧密的合作，比如在共享经济平台上设计和运行大规模的实验。通过分析来自业界的实验数据或者观测数据，从而研究运营管理中的实证问题。
